Apprentice Spotlight

This month, PJD Engineering would like to focus on first year Pipefitting Apprentice, Tom Woolaghan.

After previously working for PJD as a Stores Assistant, Tom quickly recognised his interest in Fabrication & Pipefitting and subsequently joined our September 2021 Trade Apprenticeship intake. Over the past 8 months, Tom has had the opportunity to cover a variety of disciplines including MMA, TIG and MIG Welding, Plate & Pipe Fabrication along with developing upon fundamentals in English and Maths.

Speaking on his journey so far, Tom stated: “Working within the Stores at PJD provided me with the unique opportunity to see the apprenticeship programme in action and seek guidance from those already on the scheme by candidly discussing their experiences.” Tom reflected on his decision to follow the apprenticeship route, sharing: “I’ve always preferred the hands-on experience, therefore the opportunity to undertake the practical work alongside the theory of gaining my Level 3 Diploma made perfect sense for me to achieve my long-term career goals.”

Apprentice Mentor, Don Atkinson, states: “Tom is what we would describe as a mature apprentice following previous military experience. He has seen the positives that apprenticeships have to offer, helping to set him up with an exciting career. Tom is proving to be a great addition to the team and will soon make the transition to onsite life to develop upon the experience required to be a future tradesman”.

As the academic year comes to a close, Tom eagerly anticipates integrating with the onsite teams from June onwards and looks forward to taking on responsibilities and making contributions towards ‘real’ tasks.

It’s great to follow Tom’s progression at PJD. Keep up the good work!
